ADX (Avg Directional Index)

Average Directional Index — trend strength.

Parameters (14)

  • ADX (solid): Trend strength (0–100), not direction
  • +DI (solid): Buying pressure (0–100)
  • -DI (dashed): Selling pressure (0–100)

Interpretation

  • ADX > 25: Strong trend — consider trend-following strategies
  • ADX > 50: Very strong trend — high conviction directional move
  • ADX < 20: Weak/no trend — market is ranging
  • +DI > -DI: Buyers dominating — bullish direction
  • -DI > +DI: Sellers dominating — bearish direction

Trading Signals

  • ADX rising through 25 = trend gaining strength — follow +DI/-DI direction
  • ADX above 40 = strong trend, favor trend-following
  • ADX below 20 = range — fade breakouts, favor oscillators

Price Overlay

  • Close Price: Daily closing price (right Y-axis)
  • Rising ADX + trending price = strong directional move
  • Falling ADX + choppy price = trend exhaustion
  • ADX > 25 confirms the price trend is worth following
