Chaikin Volatility

Rate of change of the high-low range — equity volatility.

What is CHV?

Chaikin Volatility measures the rate of change of the trading range (high minus low) over 10 periods. It indicates whether volatility is expanding or contracting.

Parameters (10, 10)

  • 10 periods: EMA smoothing
  • 10 periods: ROC lookback

Interpretation

  • High +: Rapidly expanding volatility
  • Near 0: Stable volatility
  • Low -: Contracting volatility

Trading Signals

  • Rising CHV often precedes breakouts
  • Falling CHV suggests consolidation
  • Extreme values may signal reversals
